Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I speak to grantors, clients and contractors to arrange consents for utilities companies. Daily, I make phone calls, send emails, draft legal documents, negotiate compensation and agents fees, draft plans for new and existing utilities equipment to secure under the appropriate legal rights for my clients. I go out to site regularly to speak to grantors to explain proposals and what my client requires from their land. I have a varied balance of working in the office and going out on site.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
As soon as you arrive, you are given your own projects which are directly related to clients and have specific deadlines. None of the work is theoretical, it is all practical and requires adapting quickly to pick up the new projects. You are given a lot of responsibility from the start, but support is there to ensure you are doing the job correctly. You are responsible not only to the company, but also to to your clients whos projects you are working on.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
My communication skills have developed through speaking to grantors, clients and contractors. You learn to stand up for your self and trust in your own work to ensure you progress the projects quickly. My written skills have also improved by speaking to a variety of clients and grantors, and from drafting legal documents. You learn how to manage time well as you are often dealing with multiple of your own projects all at one time.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
When you join, you are allocated a buddy in the office who can show you around and help you on your jobs and setting everything up. You also work closely with your manager and have weekly meeting with them to discuss any questions that you may have in your projects. There is always support available from members of the team, making it easy to pick up work quickly.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
There is a good culture here which makes it nice to spend time in the office.There is the option to work from home, but I find it nice to work in the office as you have support on hand and the atmosphere is good. The team you work in is quite small so it is easy for the atmosphere to change dependant on a few peoples moods, but overall this makes it easy to have conversations and maintain a good atmosphere.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I have enjoyed my placement year and think that is has given me an immense amount of skills that will allow me to work here in the future, or put me in a good position for applying for other graduate jobs. There has been lots of social office opportunities and you feel like you can be your self which makes working more enjoyable.

What advice would you give to others applying to Fisher German
Just be yourself. The application process is very simple with just a cover letter and CV before an interview, so the best way to get the job is to be yourself. You need to be able to pick up work quickly and work on multiple projects so you need to make sure you can showcase this in your interview.
