Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My work was split 50/50. Half my work involves development of new formulations and conducting appropriate analytical testing to validate them. The other half is work for innovation projects where I prepare samples and initiate stability testing for product launches. In addition I prepare samples for various consumer testing studies. This involves regular communication with brand, supply chain, packaging and various other teams.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was responsible for coordinating stability work for all new stick variants for a brand project launch. I also was responsible for performing mandatory fragrance interaction tests for all new antiperspirant aerosol variants for the same launch.
For the product development side of my placement I was responsible for planning my own research project, along with inputs and help from members of the team.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
This placement has mostly developed my organisation and forward thinking skills- planning ahead and problem solving is key to this role. Exposure to a wide variety of functions has also helped my communication skills, particularly with explaining more scientific concepts to those without a scientific background.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
For my work on project innovation, the team was very supportive and several members of the team were happy to help me with systems and procedures I was unfamiliar with. Early on in the placement I wasn’t given much to do- I would’ve appreciated more shadowing opportunities.
For my product development work I was assigned a buddy who I regularly met up with to offer suggestions and guidance for my project.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture in R&D is extremely positive, with a strong sense of community. There are several voluntary teams dedicated to improving things like wellbeing and there are frequent events to celebrate product launches, get involved in volunteering, ED&I or just having fun. There’s also a very very strong emphasis on safety. I think the culture is probably what Unilever R&D excels at the most.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I did have a lot of fun and met a lot of wonderful people, particularly my fellow students. I also enjoyed the new challenges and problem solving opportunities I was presented with. My mental health did suffer around times where I had university work to do alongside my placement work- I had to take holiday for an exam for example. Despite this my line manager was very supportive and helped me out massively when I felt overwhelmed.
