Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
blend of meetings, desk work and practical work. Practical work can include ice cream processing, lab measurements like rheology, droplet size and meltdown of ice cream, chopping up ice cream for tasting sessions, making ice cream mixes small scale, preparing samples of flavours to ship. Desk work may include contacting suppliers or different teams, organising practical work, analysing data.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Much more than I had expected. My team has quite a democratic structure so there are no stupid questions and people, not just your direct managers, are supportive of the work that you would like to do and happy to signpost you to people with different sorts of tasks to take on

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Well 2 months in my original manager left for another job and I was being managed by his manager who was much less available with so much on his plate at the time. He was very supportive and a genuine fella but has little time to give support outside of our weekly catchups

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Good work/life balance. Casual dress, many sport clubs on site, regular optional activities to do as a team. I once mentioned that I opened my laptop outside of working hours and somebody said you shouldn't have to do that and asked if I needed any support.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
One thing that does bother me is a lot of my time is spent freezing ice cream with different flavours dosed in and that's really boring and repetitive after a while but it needs doing. No it's good though in general. There's also a close-knit community of IPs and apprentices who do all social events

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever
Definitely go to either Nottingham or Bath university. They have relationships with those unis so you don't have to go through the assessment centre. Also just talk to people. Colworth is a nice site where people like to help each other generally so make good impressions with people and you'll never be stuck on your own. Ask questions too.
