Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I support the Global Marketing Manager in the innovation of a laundry detergent in the Dirt is Good team. My role will tend to focus on smaller tasks which will last for a few weeks, which will support the entire ecosystem development. I interact with cross functional teams aswell as global markets in their rollouts, in preparation for launch
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was gently supported in my placement at the beginning, allowing me to become accustomed to the Unilever ways of working and my expectations. After my mid year review I was provided more of a sense of leadership, leading PTM's and doing my own personal tasks without having to run things past my line manager every time.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
My line manager was excellent at providing support. There was a period of time where he was so busy with the launch, so I did feel slightly left to my free will and found myself less busy. When I voiced this to him however he recognised this and supported me in growing my confidence again

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
My team was generally welcoming. Having joined after the normal placement start date, a lot of them were unaware of me being in the team. Because of this, they were slightly standoffish at the start but I had to make an effort to introduce myself and work alongside them comfortably. Now in my role they are much more welcoming.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I have enjoyed the opportunities it has given me to be in a successful company, and have involvement in a Big Bet launch for Homecare. I haven't found the actual product that I am working on the most enjoyable, and I have found the culture of employees to be quite cliquey and immature. Not everyone is the most welcoming and it was difficult to make friends in the beginning.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever
It is widely different to what you would presume a marketing role to be like. What you learn in university will support you, but expect to be thrown out of your comfort zone. Being around adults who are much older than you is also a lot different to anything before, especially when they are all hardworking, successful people. I did learn an immense amount of experience, but I would say it is widely different to what I thought a role would be
