Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The insight involved panels from different teams within the firm as they discussed their recent cases, the clients they deal with and the work they normally undertake. There was also the opportunity for Q&A with current trainees to answer questions about applications, the culture of the firm and the responsibilities given to trainees.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
This was hugely insightful to learning about the type of work A&O (now A&O Shearman) is involved in alongside how the merger will expand the firm's client base and scope of work. The opportunities to network with individuals in different specialist teams highlighted the breadth of expertise and variation in roles offered.

This experience developed by communication and organisational skills. It was also crucial in developing my legal knowledge and providing me with a holistic insight into the type of work undertaken by trainees and the breadth of work they are involved in.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
My experience of the firm's culture was hugely positive. Trainees clearly felt supported within their different seats and emphasised networks in place to help them integrate into the firm. Further, the panel from the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion team highlighted the different initiatives in placer to foster an inclusive atmosphere which shone through throughout the insight scheme.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I thoroughly enjoyed this scheme and thought it provided an indispensable insight into the firm. The structure facilitated both networking opportunities alongside an overview of the firm and more detailed insights into different seats and recent cases. The painting social allowed everyone on the scheme to get to know one another which was really enjoyable and I look forward to seeing everyone again in September.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to A&O Shearman
I would recommend making your application as specific as possible, researching what in particular makes you want to apply to A&O Shearman. For the video interview I would recommend looking at an example case study interview to familiarise yourself with the type of questions you could be asked and ensure you structure your answer clearly.
