Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Responsible for all liquid changeovers within the factory from start to finish so machines are ready to run. This involves tacking volumes of liquid used, time taken and enzymatic, colour and allergen levels. Any issues relating to changeovers are identified and sent to me to resolve. Each day, the information of any changeovers must be checked along with pass rates before reporting this information to the wider team. There are also many smaller projects in the short term which are required, changing weekly.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was made project lead for all types of liquid changeovers including enzymatic washouts and a new dual colour formulation introduced later during the placement due to my knowledge on the process and topic which I had redeveloped. As this was the first procedure required in the factory in order to begin producing product, it was imperative that the methods were optimised, tested, validated and documented beforehand.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Use of software applications such as Kusto, Power BI and IPS for data analysis and data manipulation to retrieve the required information for tracking and tracing key losses. Key focus on Excel and other microsoft applications.
Key skills in this environment are communication and teamwork along with time management and problem solving especially for project related work which can be forgotten against the daily cycle of work.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Very much so! I was provided with vast amounts of responsibility to revolutionise a system that was one of the biggest losses, allowing me to reach extremely positive and tangible results that I will be able to speak about in the future and clearly present the process and method taken. The environment and co workers were helpful and friendly creating a fun environment to work in and develop along with the opportunity to learn completely new software and mechanical skills.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever
To ensure that as soon as you start, introduce yourself and speak to every single person possible as it will be beneficial as soon as your work is underway both for training, learning and general day to day work. Also, that each week you have a plan of what is priority and what needs to be achieved, but with an understanding that there is a flexible and reactive nature to work and things change very quickly (don't be afraid to speak out and explain things if they aren't possible to complete all at once)
