Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The vacation scheme was highly organised and designed to give us a thorough understanding of the work and culture at Allen & Overy. Each of us was assigned a Trainer and a Trainee Buddee with whom we interacted throughout the week. My Trainer introduced me to her team and gave me tasks to complete each day. I was also given opportunities to get involved in wider team meetings and company-wide events. A group task was assigned to complete over the week, which we fit in around other individual tasks and group sessions.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
I had an amazing experience at Allen & Overy and I enjoyed getting to know the people behind the business. Since I had a clear role as a solicitor in mind (that was the aim of the Vacation Scheme) there was not much emphasis on other potential roles, although I did enjoy meeting a Legal Apprentice and learning about her route into the company.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
As a non-law student, I learnt how to start thinking like a lawyer in general. My awareness of the kinds of legal issues to look out for was enhanced, as was my understanding of how to structure an appropriate email and response to a set legal task.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
For a large international organisation, Allen & Overy was an extremely friendly company. Everyone I met was welcoming and made an effort to make time for my questions which I appreciated. The culture was excellent: it was clear that A&O are committed to providing the best service by ensuring that their employees are well looked-after. There was a genuine belief that everyone deserves to feel comfortable and safe at work; the number and ambition of the employee networks was impressive.
