Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
A fantastic opportunity, giving an insight into the work which the lawyers do but also importantly, the supportive culture at the firm. Each day, there were many opportunities to ask questions during talks, reach out to individuals within the firm and speak to the Graduate Recruitment Team. There was also a great opportunity to form connections with peers on the Scheme in completing a Group Innovation Challenge!
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was great to hear about the opportunities available. I was particularly excited to hear about the wide range of secondment opportunities which the firm offers trainees.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I was able to develop my teamwork skills in preparing for the Innovation Challenge, communication skills in reaching out to individuals in the firm and engaging with everyone on the Scheme and time management skills in following the fantastic schedule we received for the week!

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Very supportive! What I really liked was that many individuals were very open and shared very personal insights into their journeys at the firm. There was also emphasis on mental health, many diversity initiatives and pro bono opportunities. In addition, great scope to get involved in sport and music groups within the firm.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to A&O Shearman
In terms of preparing for the assessment centre, I found it helpful to understand the work which different practice areas do and how they can collaborate when working on a transaction for example. It is also useful to think carefully about what is motivating your application and relate that to any personal experiences.
