Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Daily completion of bank reconciliations, coordinating with overseas entities for completion of intercompany transactions, preparing and posting journals using both Oracle and SAP, creating WBS elements, assisting with audit and compliance procedures such as SOX testing
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
From my first month there were tasks that I was held responsible for that were essential to the month end closing, such as accrual postings, as well as becoming the focal for new contractors - i.e., if I did not complete the task, they would not be paid. During my time we underwent a business transformation, so I also solely held training sessions with the 8 new starters for some of the tasks I was responsible for (e.g. bank reconciliations for 9 different ledgers), and I became the focal for these tasks during the handover.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The hours are long in accounting at month end, especially at the month end close, but this is expected across all companies within accounting departments. The atmosphere is supportive, and people are understanding of personal commitments, so the flexible working options are greatly appreciated.

Very much so - the goods/services Boeing produces are interesting to learn about, and this translates nicely into daily work. There are plenty of opportunities to develop your understanding of the company and of your function, and the people are very supportive of one another. There is a real sense of community here.
