Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
Meeting and greeting to start the day and then heading into presentations held by trainees and/or solicitors at the firm who described the work performed by their departments. It also included various exercises aimed at testing and improving skills relevant to the practice of law such as research, writing, collaboration, and communication. With healthy doses of breaks in between, the days flowed seamlessly and made the experience very enjoyable.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
Fascinating. As a very well balanced firm, Stephenson Harwood not only offers a nice mix of corporate work, they do so across the non-contentious and contentious segments of law which provides a great platform for learning and understanding the law broadly and comprehensively. Their approach to introducing the ins and outs of the practice areas was excellent due to their use of practical examples, live demonstrations of legal procedures, and a straight-talking attitude.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
My planning, writing and collaborative skills were further developed during this placement scheme. The tasks assigned touched upon elements of these skills, requiring proficiency in these areas to successfully execute their requirements. Given that the tasks posed a bit of challenge, they assisted with the development and sharpening of these skills particularly as it applies to the practice, and not just study, of law.

5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Friendly, collegial and relaxing. Stephenson Harwood prides itself on its big but small feel and this shone through during the placement scheme despite it being a virtual experience. For example, representatives from the Marine and International Trade department, Cathal Leigh Doyle and Henry Cunningham, were relaxed, light-hearted and easy-going during their presentation, creating a work environment I envision myself thriving in and hope to become a part of very soon.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
A great deal. It was revealing and illuminating of the type of work I will be doing as a trainee and solicitor of the firm. In speaking with my buddy, Ruhal Mittal, and supervisor, Afolarin Awosika, the details often sought by students in my position was readily provided and elaborated upon. This served a useful barometer to not only gauge my suitability for the firm but also the likelihood of my success at the firm.
