Actuarial intern Review

The first two weeks revolves around training and learning about the company, job role, and being taught the necessary work-specific skills. In this time we also write a presentation on a work-related topic of our choice, which we present in week three. We then move onto client work, which involves lots of data manipulation within Excel and using LCP's graphing tool Visualise. Work is delegated mostly by recent graduates but also sometimes partners too.

I was encouraged to get as involved in client work as possible, so was responsible for lots of initial calculations and data inputting, but this was always checked by multiple people so, whilst I had the responsibility of doing actual client work, I always had the reassurance of knowing it would be checked by others after. I was also given the opportunity to work with a different department and lead research into an area I was particularly interested in. Through this I had the opportunity to lead meetings and feed back to the rest of the team on the project.

I've learnt skills in Excel (I had no prior experience before starting the internship) and also learnt lots of pensions-specific calculations/methods. I am also now much more familiar with OneNote and Teams than before, and have improved my communication skills, liaising with all different members of the department on a daily basis.

There is a team system where every intern is allocated to a team within the department. Within this I had a buddy, who was a recent graduate, and a team leader. These were both points of contact both for help with work, and also if I had any questions or needed any other support. Any work I was given was delegated clearly and I was always encouraged to ask questions if I didn't understand. I was also encouraged to learn by example, always being sent an example of work that has already been done so I can understand what is expected of the task.

Everyone is incredibly welcoming and friendly, and always happy to help if I'm confused about something, even if they're not who has set me the work. There is an amazing social scene too, with regular team and company-wide socials, from weekly sports training/matches to lunch socials and after-work activities. Everyone always gets really involved in these and as interns we were encouraged to get as stuck-in as possible too.

I had the best time working at LCP over the summer. It gave me great insight into what working as a pensions actuary is like, and really helped me develop the necessary skills for the job, as well as getting fully involved in client work too. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, and I loved getting stuck in to the socials and sports too - it was a really great opportunity to get to know others at the company better outside of the formal work setting.
