Software Developer Review

Day-to-day, we work on features for projects, which could be in frontend or backend or both. We then create pull requests to get code reviewed. Sometimes you might demo a new feature or talk to a client. Each morning most teams have a brief standup meeting, and every other week there's a companywide meeting to check on progress etc.

I was not in a customer facing project so didn't have that responsibility. However, my project leader was quite relaxed and so me and my project partner definitely felt a sense of responsibility as everything wasn't micromanaged and sometimes we decided what we should individually work on.

I've developed a lot of skill in coding, through the initial training programme. I had no real experience in anything but Python before the internship, and now I am confident in typescript / React and also know some C#. I've also learned how to take criticism better through the continual feedback PRs give, as well as developing teamwork and communication skills.

Everyone at the company was open to questions, especially during the training weeks. At times I felt a bit confused but after asking someone it was cleared up. You definitely need to get used to learning from others, rather than trying to figure out everything for yourself (although some independence is of course expected)!

It's a very inclusive and friendly environment, I'm a relatively shy person and I felt like even I could contribute to discussions. There's events for morale (interns can even suggest them) and various regular activities such as board game nights to create a sense of community.

I have found this placement to be invaluable. I learned so much while making many friends and keeping a healthy work-life balance. It showed me that jobs aren't all the same boring office job some media depicts them to be, and gave me confidence that I too could code despite not having a CS background.
