Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I worked alongside the external communications team in Legal & General Capital (the alternative asset platform of Legal & General). I was involved in a number of research projects about journalists and communications strategies. I also had the chance to sit in on many meetings with the PR team from LGC, but also PR meetings across the group.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given independent tasks to complete. However, I was offered support throughout these so I was not left completely only to complete tasks.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, I have definitely developed my written and verbal communication skills, and my ability to carry out effective research. I have also learnt much more about how the PR industry operates.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received lots of support and guidance. You are given a 'buddy' who is in a similar area and similar age to you, who is there as a friendly face who you can ask for help from. The team also provided me with lots of support and guidance, and was constantly checking in to ensure I was enjoying both the work I was doing, but also more generally my time at the company.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Everyone was very friendly and very much keen to help you and chat to you about their work within the company. There were socials available and lunchtime/post work activities which were available to take part in to meet new people. There were also lots of other interns who were in the same boat as you.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed it. I feel like I have learnt a lot and it has definitely put my career on track. After the internship there is the possibility of being offered a grad role, which is definitely an added bonus.

What advice would you give to others applying to Legal & General
Research the company thoroughly to learn not only what it does, but what it stands for. Having an intrinsic understanding of the ethos behind the company (as well as a shared passion for the things it does) will definitely help you stand out in an interview.
