Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
On a day to day basis, the role involves working with different members of the risk team to assist with work on financial risk management. This included programming in R and using Excel for financial forecasting, anomaly detection, financial modelling, risk quantification, asset class research, and more. The role involves a lot of ad hoc work and does not have a set structure.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes. I was immediately given actual work that the team needed and had the processes explained to me. None of the work that I did was meaningless and it was all useful for the team.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt to apply many of the abstract skills from my degree in mathematics and statistics to financial risk management. I have improved upon my understanding of how financial models in Excel work; my ability to use R for quantitative risk management (specifically relating to the methods discussed above); my presentation skills; and I have learnt more about how the risk management process differs between different divisions of the company.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received lots of support and guidance. I was able to meet and speak with most of the team on a regular basis. The team had daily calls every morning and so I was able to catch up with them then. I was also assigned a member of the team each day that I could reach out to if I ever needed assistance, support, or guidance.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Legal & General to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Legal & General
There is a big emphasis on inclusive capitalism and an encouragement of curiosity. Be willing to ask questions and show that you are eager to learn more. Equally, show that you understand that the company places more than just an emphasis on the financials - with nuanced thoughts when it comes to investments that are lucrative but potentially harmful to wider society.
