Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role as an actuarial intern within the Longevity Risk team meant I had lots of different experience with sub-teams such as transactions, trend and also research tasks. I worked closely with my manager to complete a report to identify methods of base table blending. I also worked on a US DB pension scheme transaction under the guidance of those in that team. I then worked with the trend team using the Life Expectancy calculator and CMI model to help set assumptions for the mortality rates.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given responsibility to complete tasks that would be expected to be accurate and, although checked by a manager, effectively helped to price transactions/set assumptions. I was left to have control over my research/report tasks and also trusted to check formulas in data sets by senior managers

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have vastly improved my excel skills and feel more comfortable working with large sets of data. I have also learnt to be able to effectively plan my days to complete work to deadlines. I have learnt how to use Alteryx which is used when judging life expectancies for transactions.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I have been given lots of support over the 8 weeks. I have a daily call with my manager to check everything is going smoothly. Everyone on the team is more than happy to jump on a teams call and explain anything you are stuck on. Everyone is available during the day on teams via chat or call. I also was assigned a buddy who is a recent grad to ensure I had help.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture is spoken about for a reason. I felt very comfortable and confident to ask questions and integrate within the team. We had opportunities to meet and spend time with the other interns. My specific team was very welcoming and I felt I integrated easily into the team. Overall, I haven't met anyone who isn't friendly or easy to talk to.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my internship, I felt I learnt a lot but felt supported the entire time. It is a great pre-view of the sort of company I would want to work for in the future and I think I saw the great work/social life balance everyone achieves here.

What advice would you give to others applying to Legal & General
Research the company! Focus on their ESG initiatives and their culture - they don't expect you to walk in as an expert so don't worry about previous experience. Try to think about how you would fit in and if the company values align with your own.
