Virtual vacation scheme attendee Review

It was the first virtual vacation scheme that the firm had run, lasting for 3 days with talks from lawyers in each of the firm's core practice areas and sectors. We were also set a mini assignment,
a group exercise and project which I presented on the final day, and also had time built in to meet my trainee buddy and mentor for the project.

The placement confirmed my interest in a career as a solicitor, and at Shoosmiths. I enjoyed contextualising what I had learnt about the firm in my own research with real-world examples and experiences that employees spoke about during the talks.

The placement gave me a great insight into the firm, which built upon my previous knowledge gained from the insight day and my independent research. It also strengthened my commercial awareness skills in researching for the project, and allowed me to demonstrate my communication skills when presenting it. The scheme has also improved my confidence in networking with current employees at the firm, which has in turn strengthened my commitment to a career in law.

I had already attended a virtual insight day with the firm, so I was aware of the company's values, culture and initiatives they had to promote CSR, diversity and inclusion, and social events for staff. The scheme only confirmed this insight, as everyone was friendly and willing to take time out of their day to meet me. I felt particularly supported by my trainee buddy, who made me feel really welcome.

I really enjoyed the vacation scheme as I got a good insight into the firm's work and company culture. The variety of the schedule meant that I had a lot of different tasks to do, and I got a holistic view of what the firm does. I really enjoyed getting to know everyone and felt really welcomed, and was able to take part in a virtual escape room as well which was really fun!
