Marketing Industrial Placement Review

My job title within my placement is Assistant Brand Manager. I am responsible for running and owning brand projects, campaigns and new product launches. I was responsible for cross-function management and leading project teams. My role was very varied; from performance reviews and data tracking, to asset creation and media briefing i got to experience all aspects of marketing and develop my business acumen.

Absolutely, i was given more responsibility than I expected and whilst this can seem overwhelming the support and training i received first to be able to take on these tasks was amazing. The responsibility was built up across my placement so it wasn't intimidating and i was confident in my own abilities to take on work given to me. There is constant support available for placement students from a variety of people

This placements really helped me to develop my time management and communication skills. Working cross-functionally and with senior members of the company taught me a lot about adapting communication and understanding business needs. I've also learnt new skills including specific software use, upskilling myself in business processes and have a wider understanding of how full businesses operate. At the start of this placement we had a full training plan organised for us. This included training on all the internal software and processes as well as upskilling in basic tools such as Microsoft applications. I had introductions into every function within Unilever, not just marketing, so i could understand their importance so i could better manage cross-functional teams with a clear understanding. There are trainings across the whole placement as well and refreshers where needed!

The company culture at Unilever was amazing. I immediately felt welcome within my team and they went out of their way to integrate me into all aspects of the team. Everyone was always receptive to me, always patient with the amount of questions i had and really worked to understand what i wanted to achieve from my placement and tailored my workplan around my personal goals.

I absolutely loved my placement, it absolutely exceeded my expectations. My team were so supportive and have really helped me develop personally and within work. I have learnt so much which i can apply back to my final year of university and into my career. I have had so much fun in my placement that it almost didn't feel like work! I would love to be back at Unilever at some point during my career
