About Network Rail

Network Rail manages Britain’s rail infrastructure, including tracks, signalling, bridges, and stations, ensuring safe and efficient travel for millions. Our 10-week summer internships offer penultimate-year students hands-on experience, mentorship, and the opportunity to contribute to impactful rail projects.

Internship Overview

Our summer internships run for 10 weeks, typically starting in June 2027, and are designed for students in their penultimate year of university. Interns gain practical experience in a specific business area, develop professional skills, and may be fast-tracked to graduate schemes.

  • Mechanical Engineering Summer Internship: Work on engineering projects related to power distribution, plant, traction, and rolling stock at a major railway centre.
  • Electrical Engineering Summer Internship: Focus on electrical and electronic systems within rail infrastructure.
  • Civil Engineering Summer Internship: Contribute to civil engineering projects enhancing rail infrastructure.
  • Project Management Summer Internship: Develop project management skills on real rail projects.
  • Finance Summer Internship: Gain insight into financial operations, including reporting and analysis.
  • Network Strategy, Planning & Analysis Summer Internship: Support strategic planning to improve the rail network.
