Job Description
Project Engineer Level 4 Apprenticeship 2026
Are you looking to kick start your career as a Project Engineer?
Do you want to work on exciting building services projects that challenge you daily and get paid while you do it?
Do you want to be involved in delivering complex electrical or mechanical systems safely, profitably and to customer satisfaction?
Do you want to walk past a building and know you played your part in its journey?
If the answer to these questions is yes, then join NG Bailey and be part of the next generation who bring to life the next nuclear power station, hospital, school or theme park. Maybe you’ll help save the environment in your own small way by being involved in the delivery of low‑carbon technologies on a new wind farm or battery factory.
A typical day will be diverse, challenging and very rewarding. You will be part of our experienced Engineering Team, learning how electrical or mechanical building services systems are designed, installed, commissioned and handed over on complex construction projects.
As an NG Bailey apprentice you will:
- Learn about our award‑winning approach to working safely
- Work in our offices and on construction sites
- Be prepared for early starts and travel away from home
- Develop strong working relationships with experienced engineers, site teams and project managers
- Have a strong support network giving you the chance to build your confidence, skills and professional judgement
This role is designed to develop over time. You will start with core processes and supervised tasks, building technical knowledge and responsibility as your competence and confidence grow.
You will learn to:
- Develop a technical understanding of electrical and/or mechanical building services systems installed in commercial and complex buildings
- Read, understand and work with technical specifications, drawings and schedules
- Work with engineers and BIM teams to coordinate designs and resolve technical queries
- Raise and manage Requests for Information (RFIs) and understand the importance of clear audit trail
- Prepare and deliver Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) to support safe installation activities
- Support the procurement process, including requesting quotations, assessing technical compliance and placing orders
- Attend project meetings with clients, designers, contractors and internal teams
- Prepare information for progress reports, programme updates and cost control
- Work with your project team to monitor installation progress against the programme and identify risks, solutions and opportunities
- Learn how to manage change, including the importance of early warning notices and their impact on time and cost
- Support commissioning activities and ensure systems are delivered and handed over in line with quality standards and completed drawings
- As you gain experience, manage small sections of a project and take responsibility for meeting agreed targets and deadlines
We are looking for people who:
- Are keen to learn and develop technical and professional skills
- Share our values of Passion, Integrity, Responsibility and Excellence
- Are organised, well prepared, and demonstrate good timekeeping and attendance
- Can communicate clearly in writing and in person
- Enjoy working as part of a team but can also act independently when required
- Can follow instructions, manage competing priorities and work under pressure
You will attend college on block release to complete the Level 4 Building Services Engineering Senior Technician apprenticeship and regularly attend in‑house training and development as part of the programme.
To apply you need:
5 GCSEs (or equivalent) grade C/4 or above in English Language, Maths, Science and 2 other subjects.
Plus, have achieved (or be predicted to achieve) 2x A Levels grade C (or equivalent such as BTEC Extended Diploma, Level 3 Diploma, Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship) in STEM subjects.

- Must be able to complete the apprenticeship within the required time, including the End-Point Assessment.
