Why did you choose to work in your industry?
Working in an FMCG/healthcare company I love the fact that we have products and services available that can help people in their everyday lives, be that consumers, professionals or patients. And that we have the science and evidence to back them up! With my role in marketing you feel like what you do can make a real difference.
What is your top tip for working in this industry?
Be passionate and determined about what you want to do. If you are, then no matter what you will be able to achieve your ambitions.
Which personality traits or skills aid success in your industry?
Determination. Passion. Innovative.
Describe the workload and responsibility given to students in your industry?
Placement students are given real responsibility as soon as they join the team. Not only do they look after important brand administration but they take on projects that have a real impact on the business. This could be running PR activity , creating new materials or leading and supporting on digital campaigns.
What do you enjoy most about your industry?
Love the fact it is fast paced and ever changing and that you need to constantly evolve your skillset. What you used to do or work on a few years ago can still apply, or may be completely obsolete as technology evolves. Working in marketing, you get to stay at the forefront and try new things.
What advice would you give to others considering a career in your industry?
Look at how you can gain insight and experience to understand if it’s what you really want to do. This could be through a placement or finding a mentor or even researching the industry and profession. Would also recommend keeping an open mind – even within FMCG/Healthcare companies, what is expected from a marketer can vary, so be open to new experiences and think about where you want to build your career and why.
