Describe your role and what it entails
My role is incredibly varied. I do a lot of work on internal and executive communications which sees me drafting memos to Team Members, working on video content, drafting LinkedIn posts for executives, designing invites and collages and organising events to name a few.
What have been your highlights?
I have absolutely loved working on events for both my team and other Team Members: putting something together and then getting to see everyone enjoy themselves is so rewarding. I’ve had the opportunity to go to a number of hotels to get photos and video footage and getting to interact with different Team Members and do something completely away from my desk has been amazing. Also, one of my highlights has got to be meeting and getting photos with Paris Hilton at the leadership conference!
What challenges have you faced during your internship?
The biggest challenge I faced was definitely managing my workload. I would receive various tasks, assigned by different people, and wanted to say yes to everything all the time. I realised that sometimes I would have to turn down some jobs or ask for a longer deadline on others and that that was okay.
What have you learnt from your experience in the role?
I have learnt so much from my time at Hilton. I’ve discovered interests that I didn’t know I had such as design and working on video content. I’ve learnt how to better manage my time and prioritise tasks. I’ve learnt to ask for help if I don’t know how to do something and to allow myself to make mistakes. Above all, I’ve gained so much confidence and that is definitely the thing that I am most grateful for.
What advice would you give to a student following in your footsteps?
My biggest advice would be don’t be afraid to ask for help – you will save so much time and learn so much more if you just ask. Another piece of advice is don’t be intimidated by senior people in the business. My role has seen me interact with executives frequently and you quickly realise that they are also humans just like everyone else.
