Why did you choose to work at DLA Piper?
Upon leaving the Armed Forces, I was feeling lost as to what career I should pursue; if I should continue in the engineering sector or use my skills to start somewhere fresh. When I first interviewed for the role of Property & Workplace Apprentice in the Manchester office, I knew that DLA Piper would be a brilliant place to work. The office was immaculately presented, and the interviewers were professional, respectful and well informed regarding the firm's wider business functions. They gave me advice and examples as to how somebody could progress through the business and push their limits and that's exactly what I intended to do as I started in my current role as a Service Delivery Apprentice. This role not only offers me a unique insight and experience into the firm's Law& department, but also gives me the opportunity to study for a degree; something I never thought I'd be able to do.
How would you describe the culture at DLA Piper?
Throughout my career, I've only ever found my colleagues to be helpful and considerate. My line managers have always taken an interest in my career, professional goals and my personal wellbeing. Weekly catch ups and end of reporting periods offer an opportunity to discuss goals with my line managers and mentors and these sessions have been invaluable. These are only achieved through DLA Piper's values of being Bold, Supportive, Collaborative and Exceptional. I initially believed that these values were only branding to portray externally; but I was happy to realise that everyone incorporates these values into their work, which has been central to the culture I've experienced at DLA Piper.
What pro bono or sustainability-related activities have you been involved in?
There have been many opportunities to get involved with sustainability groups and pro bono matters. I attended an event in the Sheffield office promoting sustainability in the Legal Technology's department, focusing on reducing the team's environmental impact. I've also been involved in a pro bono matter in both the Legal Technology and Legal Project Management teams: The Her Rights Initiative which represents women in South Africa who have been unethically and illegally sterilised by the South African government. It's interesting to work on this project to see how legal frameworks are established, especially from a Project Management perspective, as well as feeling like the work I'm doing is making a difference for a just cause.
