Engineering Higher Apprenticeship
At BAE Systems
Higher Level Apprenticeship
After switching from physiotherapy to engineering, Ryan found purpose, pride, and opportunity at BAE Systems in Cowes, Isle of Wight.
I originally started out in physiotherapy, but after a few years I realised I wanted a new experience.
I’d always been interested in engineering and was surrounded by friends and family working in the sector - their work sounded fascinating and impactful. That exposure gave me the confidence to explore a new career path. With my previous student loan already used, I began researching graduate and apprenticeship options. Apprenticeships stood out as the best way to gain hands-on experience and qualifications while earning - especially for someone like me coming from a non-traditional background.
BAE Systems quickly rose to the top of my list. It had a strong local reputation - people described it as a ‘job for life’, especially at the Cowes site. The chance to work on world-leading technology, such as advanced radar systems, really excited me. Knowing the work directly supports those who protect us sealed the deal.
I joined the Higher Engineering Apprenticeship, starting with a year of classroom-based learning. This gave me the confidence and technical foundation I needed. In my second year, I rotated across departments including software, mechanical and Electronic Computer-Aided Design (ECAD), spending most of my time on-site. Learning from experienced engineers was invaluable - seeing theory put into practice every day helped me grow quickly. Alongside work, I completed a Higher National Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. By my third year, I’d moved into my anchor role as a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Designer, taking on real project responsibility. I also had the chance to work on stretch assignments and get involved in STEM outreach, which helped me build communication and management skills.
Now, I’m transitioning into a project management role. It’s the next step in a journey shaped by hands-on experience, continuous learning and genuine support. One of the most rewarding moments of my apprenticeship was developing training materials for one of our export customers. I wasn’t delivering it myself, but knowing my work was being used internationally really showed me the global reach of BAE Systems. It made me feel proud of the part I played.
Working in Cowes is a huge bonus. The variety and complexity of the projects keep things interesting and the responsibility I’ve been given has helped me grow in confidence. Outside of work, I love being back on the Isle of Wight. I moved away for a few years, but the lifestyle here brought me home. From beaches to coastal walks, it’s an incredible place to live – especially with the flexibility BAE Systems offers to enjoy it.
If you're thinking of relocating, you won't just be starting a new job - you’ll be joining a company that supports your growth and a community that offers a fantastic quality of life.
