Trainee Solicitor
At Ashurst
Graduate Scheme
I am a third seat trainee currently sat with the Projects & Energy Transition team. After doing a summer vacation scheme with Ashurst in 2022, I commenced my training contract in September 2024. I have sat with the Global Markets team (in Derivatives) and have done a client secondment to NatWest Markets.
Whilst the experience so far has been challenging, it has been equally fulfilling. A particular highlight is being able to see and feel my own progression throughout my training contract – my confidence, abilities and knowledge have increased exponentially since my first day at Ashurst, for which I have my supervisors and seniors to thank. Ashurst is a great firm for training – I have found that everyone is willing, and even eager, to answer questions, impart their knowledge and give you an opportunity to try something new. I have learnt a lot, from what a derivative actually is, to how to draft professional client-facing emails, and how to time manage to meet team expectations. The workload and nature of tasks are intellectually challenging, but equal parts satisfying once completed.
Another highlight has been socialising with my cohort and wider teams; Ashurst is known for the friendly culture, and this rings true. Aside from the exciting social events that the firm regularly host, I have found the office floor to be welcoming and positive, making the firm a warm work environment.
If I were giving my past self advice about becoming a solicitor, I would tell her to (a) take care with the vacation scheme/ training contract applications (quality > quantity), and to (b) chat with as many people as possible about potential career paths to get the best idea about what may suit.
