Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Daily follow of quality problems which occur on the shop floor. As a QA engineer I am responsible for specific parts and systems on the vehicle and it is my job to ensure quality flowout with regards to my parts responsibility. On a day to day basis I will spend time on the shop floor viewing problems whilst also in the office having meetings with supplier to root cause and countermeasure any problems which have occurred.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given way more responsibility than I expected to receive. During the first few months I was given sufficient ramp-up training to get me to a competent level in which I could take on parts responsibility. This involved a wide range of engineers within the department sitting down with me to explain different functions, documents, systems etc which I would need to utilize and also lots of shadowing of other engineers. Once I was competent enough to take responsibility, I was given some complex systems such as Suspension to be responsible for.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt tonnes of new skills whilst also developing on many key skills which can be applied across a wide range of environments. The placement has provided me with a perfect opportunity to gain and develop technical skills and understanding of how large companies are run. Simultaneously, softer skills such as communication, presentation skills etc are very crucial at Toyota and are developed through my day to day role - i.e online meetings with suppliers.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
During my placement I had many different lines of support which I could utilize. I would have regular 1 to 1 meetings with my manager to discuss any topics I needed support on. I was also assigned a mentor from a different team within the department as a separate support line. Furthermore, whilst on placement you have several reviews with the Learning and Development team to discuss current progress or any other queries I had.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture is very welcoming and there are plenty of other young people in the business who were in your position not too long ago. All engineers in my team were very supportive of me throughout placement. The general atmosphere is quite chill - there are times when people are stressed and work is very serious in that moment, however to counteract that, there are also many times in which everyone is relaxed and willing to have a laugh.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I thoroughly enjoyed me placement. I felt like I was given the perfect amount of work which meant that I was always busy yet still never felt overburdened or like I was completely out of my depth. During the pandemic in which I would have been at home studying for university, placement provided me with a perfect opportunity in which I was in the office every day developing myself to have a successful future career.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd
There are such a wide range of roles available at TMUK and hence I would say that regardless of what degree you are studying or what experience you have, you should definitely consider applying. You cannot apply to a specific department so just try to show of your skill set and your experiences throughout the application process and the recruitment team will try to locate you where they feel is appropriate for you. The interview itself was not massively technical and hence just come prepared to answer questions about yourself, your experience and your motives behind applying to the company.
