Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
During my year I have moved across different jobs where I am responsible for auditing certain financial areas. This will involve speaking to the audited entity and gaining supporting documentation for what the entity are reporting. The execution phase will be completed following what was decided at planning and interim where an understanding of the entity is gained and risks are identified. I will spend most days working on excel.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Following the initial training phase I was consistently given an increasing amount of responsibility. By 6 months in I was working on an AQR in scope job and then later as part of an Audit for a group listed on the FTSE 250 during which I was given my own FSAs to complete.

I have developed my accounting and further technical skills in excel as well as my professional skills such as communicating and time management. I have further learnt how to develop professional relationships and expand my network.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was assigned both a buddy and a people manager when I started my placement as other graduates and school leavers were. I attended colleg with the rest of my intake and then further internal training specific to BDO. Following this I was working on jobs in smaller teams during which I was always provided with regular coaching. I have always felt like I have had someone to contact if I have any issues.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I really enjoyed the company culture at BDO. I have become a part of the intake with fellow graduates who have formed a close knit group. I have also attended a lot of socials such as the christmas dinner and a Pub qui that has allowed me to make connections beyond my own intake and with the wider office. Further to this I have attended socials following the completion of a Job.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I have really enjoyed my placement at BDO, feeling like I have settled in really quickly and integrated into the team. Due to the success on my placement I have started the process on returning once I have graduated. I feel like I learnt more than what I expected and it has given me a much clearer picture on my future plans.

What advice would you give to others applying to BDO
Before applying I would advise you to make an attempt to get in contact with someone who already works there. People are very friendly and would be more than happy to help in the application process, giving specific insight into the office at Bristol that can help your decision.
