Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Day to day, my main job was preparing client valuations ahead of review meetings using Dynamic Planner, producing around 800 over the year, some of them bespoke. I also chased providers such as Aviva, Aegon and Quilter for policy information, completing around 300 Letters of Authority, and kept client records up to date on Intelliflo Office.
As I progressed, I took on straightforward paraplanning, writing around 10 suitability reports covering fund switches, ISA transfers and a care fees case for a solicitor. Later in the year I also helped train new adviser support staff on the firm's software and processes.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, and it grew as the year went on. At the start I was mainly learning the systems and preparing straightforward valuations, but by the end I was supporting six advisers across two pods and managing my own workload against a two-week SLA for client reviews.
As my advisers trusted me more, I moved into paraplanning, writing suitability reports for fund switches, ISA transfers and a care fees case for a solicitor. I was also asked to help train new adviser support staff on the firm's software and processes, which was a big step up since I'd only been there a few months myself.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, a lot. On the technical side, I learnt to use Dynamic Planner and Intelliflo Office confidently, and got a solid working knowledge of pensions, ISAs and investment products through dealing with providers like Aviva, Aegon and Quilter every day.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received good support throughout, especially in the first few months. When I started, I was trained on the firm's systems and processes before taking on my own work, which made the transition much smoother.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The culture was great and the atmosphere was really friendly. Everyone was approachable, from the other adviser support staff to the advisers themselves, so I never felt awkward asking questions, even early on.
The pod structure gave it a close-knit, team feel, and people genuinely helped each other out when workloads were heavy. It was a professional environment where standards were high, but it never felt pressured or uncomfortable.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I enjoyed it very much. It was the first time I'd worked in an environment directly linked to my degree and career goals, and seeing the theory from university applied to real clients made the work feel meaningful.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Cullen Wealth to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Cullen Wealth

Go for it, it's a great place to learn the industry from the ground up. My main advice would be to show genuine interest in financial planning in your application, even if you don't know much yet. Reading up on pensions, ISAs and how financial advice works before you start will help you settle in much faster.
