Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

During my internship, my role involved exploring the use of technology and programming in fashion and textile design. My main project focused on developing a parametric pattern generator using Python, based on measurements and data from 3D body scans. I worked with geometric calculations, generated CAD files in DXF format, and used software such as Style3D and LibreCAD to develop and test the patterns.
On a day-to-day basis, I worked on programming and testing different parts of the pattern-generation process, analysing data, researching solutions to technical problems, and making improvements when my initial approaches did not work. I also gained practical experience with professional pattern digitisation software such as Lectur and had the opportunity to use sewing machines, which helped me understand how digital patterns translate into physical garments. Overall, my role involved a combination of programming, CAD, research, problem-solving, and practical fashion design.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a significant amount of responsibility during my placement. I had the freedom to explore different approaches to the project and was encouraged to solve problems independently. Rather than being given step-by-step instructions, I was expected to research solutions, test my ideas, and adapt my approach when something did not work.
For example, when I discovered that the Style3D API could not display text in the 2D window as I had originally planned, I researched alternative solutions and changed my approach to use LibreCAD. I was also responsible for developing and testing the Python code used to generate the patterns. This level of independence helped me develop my problem-solving skills, confidence, and ability to manage a technical project while still having support and guidance from my mentor when needed.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

During my internship, I developed both my technical and practical skills significantly. I improved my Python programming skills by working with dataclasses, file input/output, geometric calculations, Bezier curves, distance and angle calculations, and the generation of parametric patterns. I also gained experience working with DXF and CAD file formats and learned how programming can be used to automate aspects of fashion and pattern design.
I developed my knowledge of professional design software by working with Style3D and exploring its Python API. I also learned how to use Lectur for pattern digitisation and gained practical experience with sewing machines, which helped me understand how digital patterns are translated into physical garments.
Alongside these technical skills, I developed my problem-solving, research, and independent working skills. When my original approach did not work, I learned to investigate the problem, research alternatives, and adapt my solution. This gave me greater confidence in tackling unfamiliar technical challenges independently. Overall, the internship helped me develop a combination of programming, CAD, fashion design, practical manufacturing, and problem-solving skills.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a good balance of support and independence during my internship. My mentor provided guidance when I needed it and was available to discuss problems or questions, but I was also given the freedom to explore solutions and work independently. This allowed me to take responsibility for my project rather than relying on step-by-step instructions.
For example, when I encountered technical difficulties with the Style3D API, I was encouraged to investigate the problem and find an alternative solution. I researched different approaches and eventually used LibreCAD to achieve the required result. The support I received gave me confidence to work independently while knowing that guidance was available when necessary. I found this approach very beneficial because it helped me develop both my technical skills and my ability to solve problems independently.
