Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As the internship progressed, my responsibilities grew — I moved from purely supporting tasks to independently signing off on completed working papers once I'd built trust with my engagement manager. I regularly attended client meetings alongside senior team members, where we discussed risk exposures and audit issues, which gave me exposure to how audit findings are communicated directly to clients.
Alongside my core audit responsibilities, I also took the initiative to carry out a business development research project, identifying prospective clients within the TMT sector to support Deloitte's client pipeline, giving me a broader view of the firm beyond audit execution itself.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
As the four weeks progressed, the level of responsibility increased noticeably. I moved from purely supporting tasks to drafting audit memos and assisting directly with engagement scoping. By the later stages, I had built enough trust with my engagement manager that I was independently signing off on completed working papers — something I hadn't expected to be trusted with so early on. I also took the initiative to run a business development research project on my own, identifying prospective TMT clients, which wasn't something I was asked to do but was given the space to pursue.
Overall, the responsibility given genuinely scaled with demonstrated reliability, which made the experience feel like a real apprenticeship rather than just observing.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
In terms of existing skills, my attention to detail and analytical thinking were tested and sharpened considerably, since the working papers and memos I prepared were relied on by senior team members and fed directly into the audit's progress. My communication skills also developed a lot — particularly through sitting in client meetings and having to explain or discuss risk exposures clearly alongside more senior colleagues, which pushed me to communicate with more confidence and precision than I'd needed to before.
Beyond the technical side, I also grew more comfortable taking initiative, the business development research project I ran wasn't assigned to me, but came from wanting to add value beyond my core tasks, and it's a habit I want to keep building on going forward.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
As I demonstrated reliability, the level of oversight naturally became lighter, but support was always there when I needed it — I felt comfortable asking questions or flagging things I was unsure about, rather than guessing, which I think was part of why I was trusted with more responsibility as the weeks went on. The team was also generally approachable during client meetings, which helped me understand the context behind the numbers rather than just the technical tasks themselves.
Overall, the balance felt right, enough guidance to learn properly and avoid costly mistakes on a live engagement, but enough independence to actually take ownership of my work.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I also felt the culture struck a good balance between maintaining high standards — given the accuracy required on audit work — and being genuinely supportive of interns learning on the job. Client meetings had a similarly professional but collaborative tone, and it was clear the team valued clear communication both internally and with the client.
Overall, it felt like a culture that took development seriously, rather than just using interns for basic tasks, which made the experience feel meaningful rather than just observational.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
What I enjoyed most was the sense of progression over the four weeks — starting with supporting tasks and ending with independently signing off on completed papers gave me a real sense of achievement and showed me that trust and responsibility can be earned quickly when you deliver consistently. I also found the client-facing elements, like sitting in on risk discussions, particularly engaging, as it gave me insight into the broader commercial context behind the technical audit work.
If anything, the experience reinforced my interest in pursuing a career that combines analytical work with client relationships, which is part of why I'm now focused on opportunities in areas like corporate banking that let me build on both.

Recommendations & Advice
Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte
I'd also encourage people not to be afraid to ask questions early rather than guessing, the team would much rather clarify something upfront than have to correct a mistake later, and asking thoughtful questions actually signals engagement rather than a lack of competence.
