Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Day to day, I was allocated to a project within one of TTC's sub-teams, where my work included Excel-based analysis such as sorting trial balances, building SUMIF-based reconciliations, and cleaning and structuring data tables to support elements of financial statement preparation. For anything client-data specific, I used Deloitte's internal AI tools, Copilot and PairD, in line with confidentiality protocols. I had recurring Monday, Wednesday and Friday check-ins with my People Leader to report on progress and agree priorities, alongside regular collaboration with my buddy and wider team members, including opportunities to shadow senior staff on client calls. Beyond my core project work, I also contributed to the wider intern and graduate community, including proposing peer catch-up calls between interns.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a good level of responsibility, which grew as trust was established. Early tasks were more supporting in nature (Excel-based analysis and reconciliations), but I proactively sought out further exposure rather than waiting to be assigned it. This includes shadowing partners on client calls twice within my first three weeks, and independently connecting with an Associate Director through newsletter work. I also initiated my own contributions, such as organising peer calls between interns. Being proactive was flagged by my People Leader as a key differentiator for standout interns, and this approach earned me increasing autonomy as the placement progressed.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, both. On the technical side, I developed my Excel skills further, by building SUMIF-based reconciliations, sorting and cleaning trial balances, and structuring tables to support financial statement preparation. I also learned to use Deloitte's internal AI tools, Copilot and PairD, for client-data-specific work. Beyond technical skills, I developed my commercial awareness by working directly on real client tax transformation issues, and improved my ability to manage stakeholder relationships, including regular structured check-ins with my People Leader and building rapport with my buddy and wider team. I also strengthened my proactivity and initiative by proposing and organising peer calls between interns. Also gained experience presenting myself confidently in front of senior staff, including partners, during shadowing opportunities.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a strong level of support throughout the placement. I had regular Monday, Wednesday and Friday check-ins with my People Leader, which gave me a consistent space to discuss progress, agree priorities and ask questions. I also had a very approachable buddy who sat with me, was easy to ask questions to, and had worked on one of my allocated projects, which made day-to-day guidance easy to access. Beyond these two key relationships, the wider team was supportive when I needed help with tasks or wanted context on client work. Overall, I felt well supported and never hesitated to ask for help when I needed it.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The atmosphere was collaborative, supportive and approachable rather than hierarchical. Despite working alongside partners and senior staff, I found people genuinely willing to make time for questions and give guidance, which made it easy to ask for help without hesitation. My buddy and People Leader in particular created a welcoming environment from day one, and the wider team was open to including interns in real work and client-facing opportunities rather than keeping us at arm's length. Overall, the culture felt inclusive and encouraging of proactivity, which matched what I'd been told to expect from Deloitte's ways of working.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I enjoyed the placement a great deal. Getting genuine exposure to client tax transformation work, rather than purely observational tasks, made it feel meaningful rather than just a box-ticking exercise. The support from my People Leader and buddy made the experience enjoyable day-to-day, and opportunities like shadowing partners on client calls and building my own connections across the team gave me a real sense of progress and achievement. I found the combination of technical learning, commercial exposure and relationship-building genuinely engaging, and it confirmed that this is a team and environment I want to build my career in.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte

My advice would be to be proactive from day one. Don't wait to be given work, spot opportunities and offer to help. Ask for help immediately when you're stuck rather than struggling alone, and make a habit of collecting feedback formally at the end of each project rather than assuming it'll come to you. Try to build relationships beyond your immediate team, since reaching out to people doing interesting work can open up shadowing and networking opportunities you wouldn't otherwise get, and make sure you respect people's time and follow through on commitments, as small things like staying organised and keeping meeting notes build trust quickly. Finally, bring genuine curiosity about the business and clients, not just technical ability. Commercial awareness matters just as much as task execution.
