Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
Very positive experience. Balfour Beatty is a good company with a people focused ethos. The graduate scheme is great. It eases you in gradually whilst pushing you to achieve your potential. The scheme includes two residentials which are great fun.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Main responsibilities include, ensuring environmental compliance, carbon reporting, consents and licenses, advising the construction process on environmental best practice and ecological checks and compliance.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

The job definitely provides the opportunity to contribute meaningfully, but advising on environmental compliance and enforcing restrictions on works can sometimes create tensions, meaning the feeling of being valued by the team is less evident.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

The job comes with a company car which is a fantastic benefit and has made a big impact to my ability to commute to work and has improved my freedom outside of work. There are other benefits which one can select if they wish.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

I feel that this is a great experience to build my knowledge and equip me for my future career in environment.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

There are opportunities for formal training which are provided by the company and there is often opportunity for self motivated training which the company will support. The day-to-day role has developed existing skills and new ones by introducing new tasks and having someone teach me how things should be done.

How is the support you receive?

At the beginning of my career my line manager was not very involved, however, other colleagues stepped up to help mentor and manage me. My line manager has since changed and has massively improved. I have had little to no contact with HR and have not had a buddy, however, this was an option to me.
How is your work-life balance?

My work life balance is good. I am able to finish on time most days and am not expected to work on the weekends. I was able to adjust my working ours on one day a week slightly to allow for me to continue to participate in my sport.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

Generally the atmosphere is good in the office and great amongst the winder sustainability team. Balfour Beatty are very strong on values and incorporate this into the culture.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

Balfour Beatty have been good in promoting wellbeing and there are areas available to support diversity. I have felt it is an open atmosphere to talk about mental health with managers. However, there are some improvements that could be done in reaching out to people who are sruggling.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

Balfour Beatty offer 2 volunteering days which are easy to use and are encouraged. Volunteering opportunities are advertised on projects, however, it is something that can be better distributed and encouraged, especially when it comes to environmental and ethical initiatives.

I have had a great experience in my career so far and have had to opportunity to learn and develop and opportunities are readily available.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

I was not sure on what my role was going to be like and felt that this could have been better communicated after the job application part

With the graduate programme there is a big gap where you receive the job offer and hear about onboarding. Use this opportunity to reach out to someone in your team or business and ask any questions.
