Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
Managing small teams of people to support individuals with learning disabilities within their own homes in the community. Admin work including on calls, face to face support and managing the staff teams.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

2/5
The apprenticeship itself, I have not enjoyed most of my experience sadly. I have found the group sessions a little tedious at times and prefer to work alone or remotely to study, sometimes helpful but mostly not. Disappointing there was a big push for Maths and English and now I hear it has been scrapped. The EPA which seems unnecessary I believe has now been scrapped but I still have to complete. I have found the work long and repetitive, the second half of the course I find myself just repeating alot.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

2/5
I have learned some new things and certainly brushed up my knowledge. When I started this course I had been a manager for 5 years, most of the skills I have learned I have learned through doing, following managers and managing people and learning on the job. I wouldn't say I have learned an actual lot from the content of the course itself. I was asked when we begin to fill in the score chart of what I would score my skills out of 10, I had to do this 3 times and was told if I didn't put under 4 for all answers the funding wouldn't be granted or my time limit to complete the course would be shortened, initially I scored myself 6-8 on most subjects and I really don't think I have improved from a a 3 to an 8 during my course. I think I have always been 6-8 and possibly moved up to a 9.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

3/5
Quite well structured, I struggled to get my 7 hours per week in until the last few months. I did feel the organisation was there but not that productive. My manager was good at supporting me most of the time but did not consider the length and body of work involved.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

3/5

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

3/5
Average, change of assessor during course was not ideal. Second assessor totally different way of working. they were there for support if needed but not always that helpful.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

2/5

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

1/5
None

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Lancashire County Council to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Yes but not my experience as Level 5 student. I have a young family and feel over worked and over whelmed at the best of times, for what my course has been for me its not been worth it for what I have got out of it. Unnecessary stress for the outcome. Again this is just my experience but I won't be rushing to do another one.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Lancashire County Council?

Expect to work hard and be prepared for it to consume a lot of your time. You will have set backs but need to push through. Before you commit really assess if this apprenticeship is really what you want to do.
