Tax Consulting Industrial Placement Review

My role involved advising multinational clients on indirect tax matters, primarily VAT, and supporting their commercial and operational objectives through practical tax advice. This included evaluating VAT recovery opportunities, analysing the indirect tax implications of business structures and transactions, coordinating cross-border projects, and communicating technical advice to both clients and international stakeholders.

Yes. Throughout my placement I was trusted with significant responsibility across client engagements, often acting as a key point of contact for clients and international Deloitte member firms. I managed workstreams from onboarding and scoping through to technical delivery, billing and stakeholder communication, while also drafting client advice, presenting VAT updates to senior client stakeholders, and contributing to transaction and litigation-related projects.

Yes. During my placement, I developed both technical and soft skills through exposure to a wide range of client engagements. Technically, I strengthened my understanding of UK and international VAT, transaction due diligence, and the commercial application of tax advice. I also improved my data analysis skills through billing, WIP and account management activities.
From a soft skills perspective, I developed strong stakeholder management, communication and project management skills by working directly with clients and international Deloitte member firms. I became more confident presenting technical updates, managing multiple workstreams, and translating complex tax issues into clear, practical advice for clients.

I received a high level of support throughout my placement. From early on, colleagues were willing to explain technical concepts, provide feedback on my work, and involve me in a wide variety of projects. I had regular catch-ups with team members and reviewers, which helped me develop my technical knowledge, improve my communication skills, and gain confidence in client-facing situations. As I progressed, I was given increasing responsibility while still having access to guidance and support whenever needed. Team members would regularly check in on my capacity to ensure I could manage the tasks given to me and, if I was very busy, they would be happy to help support and pick anything up for me.

Everyone in my team and others were always approachable and happy to discuss anything formally/informally which made me feel comfortable at work and more motivated to work. People were friendly, and I enjoyed the after-work socials, and lunches as a team together.

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at Deloitte, as the clientele and work I was involved with was always very interesting. My team made it an even better and more rewarding experience, as they were supportive of my growth and would get me involved in new projects often, increasing my technical ability.
