Summer Intern Review

During my four-week Summer Vacation Scheme in Deloitte's Audit practice, I worked as part of an engagement team supporting audit assignments for clients. Day-to-day, I assisted with audit testing, reviewed financial information, documented work performed, and used Deloitte's audit software to complete assigned procedures. I collaborated with associates, assistant managers, managers and partners, attended team meetings and client discussions, and received regular feedback to develop my technical and professional skills. Alongside project work, I participated in training sessions, completed learning modules, networked across the firm through coffee chats, and gained insight into Deloitte's audit methodology and culture.

Yes. Although I was an intern, I was given responsibility for completing real audit tasks and contributing to client engagements. I managed my own workload, liaised with colleagues when I needed clarification, and took ownership of the work assigned to me while receiving regular feedback from the team.

Yes. Throughout the placement, I developed both my technical and professional skills. I strengthened my understanding of the audit process by gaining hands-on experience with audit testing, documenting work on Deloitte's audit software, and reviewing financial information. I also improved my Excel skills through practical application and self-directed learning. In addition, I developed my communication and teamwork skills by collaborating with colleagues across different levels of seniority, asking questions, acting on feedback, and participating in team meetings and client discussions. The placement also improved my ability to manage my time, prioritise tasks, and adapt quickly to new challenges in a professional environment.

I received a high level of support throughout my placement. From the outset, I had a dedicated buddy and People Leader who were available to answer questions and provide guidance, and the wider engagement team was always approachable and willing to help. I received regular feedback on my work, which helped me improve both my technical understanding and professional skills. At the same time, I was encouraged to take ownership of my tasks and work independently where appropriate, giving me a good balance of support and responsibility.

The culture at Deloitte genuinely stood out to me and exceeded my expectations. Having gained experience across a range of customer-facing roles, as well as within other professional environments, this was by far the most welcoming, supportive and collaborative workplace I have experienced. From my first day, everyone made a conscious effort to help me settle in, answer questions and involve me in the team. Colleagues at every level were approachable and invested in my development, creating an environment where I felt comfortable asking questions, taking on new challenges and learning from feedback. Despite being an intern, I felt like a valued member of the team rather than just an extra pair of hands. The emphasis on teamwork, respect and professional development made the placement an incredibly positive experience and reinforced my desire to pursue a career with the firm.

I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of my placement and can honestly say it exceeded my expectations. The work was engaging and challenging; I learned a huge amount in a short space of time, and I had the opportunity to work alongside incredibly supportive colleagues. What made the experience particularly enjoyable was the team's welcoming culture and the trust they placed in me to contribute meaningfully. The placement reinforced my interest in pursuing a career in audit, and I was delighted to receive a return offer. I am genuinely looking forward to returning as a Graduate next year and continuing to develop my skills within the firm.
