Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a Summer Intern, my role involved supporting engineering-related projects while gaining exposure to different areas of the business. On a typical day, I worked from 9:00am to 5:00pm, focusing on assigned project work and progressing deliverables. I regularly met with my manager to discuss progress, receive guidance, and set objectives. In addition to project work, I organised shadowing opportunities across different departments to broaden my understanding of the business and learn how various teams contribute to operations. Networking was also an important part of my role, allowing me to build professional relationships, learn from experienced colleagues, and gain insight into different career paths within the organisation.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a significant level of responsibility during my internship, particularly through managing my own project. I was trusted to take ownership of the project from planning through to completion, which involved conducting research, developing solutions, tracking progress, and presenting my findings. This required me to work independently, manage my time effectively, and communicate regularly with my manager and other stakeholders to ensure the project stayed on track.
Alongside my project responsibilities, I also took the initiative to organise shadowing opportunities across different departments and build relationships with colleagues throughout the business. Having ownership of my own project gave me valuable experience in accountability, decision-making, and professional communication, and made me feel like a valued member of the team rather than just an observer.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, I have developed both my soft skills and technical skills during my internship. One of the biggest areas of growth has been my confidence in a professional office environment. Through regular meetings, networking with colleagues, and arranging shadowing opportunities across different departments, I became more comfortable communicating with new people, asking questions, and building professional relationships.
I have also developed several technical skills. In particular, I learned how to use Microsoft Power Apps, which allowed me to gain experience in creating and improving business applications. Working on my project gave me the opportunity to apply these skills in a practical setting while also improving my problem-solving, organisation, and project management abilities.
Overall, the internship has helped me become more confident professionally while also expanding my technical knowledge and experience with industry tools.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a good level of support and guidance throughout my internship. There were always colleagues and managers willing to help, answer questions, and provide advice whenever needed. While support was readily available, it often required me to take the initiative and ask for it myself. As my confidence grew, I became much more comfortable reaching out to people across the business, and I found that everyone was very approachable and happy to share their knowledge and experience.
