Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role involves supporting the team with the preparation of UK tax compliance and advisory work for internationally mobile employees. On a day-to-day basis, I review client information and workpapers, assist with Upfront Reviews (UFRs), analyse residency and split-year treatment positions, prepare notes for tax returns, and carry out compensation and payroll data analysis. I also draft emails and client correspondence, update trackers and workpapers, liaise with colleagues across different teams, and support managers with ad hoc research and administrative tasks. The role has given me exposure to both the technical aspects of UK tax and the practical skills needed to manage client work and collaborate effectively within a professional services environment.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, particularly as the internship progressed. I was trusted to take ownership of a range of client-related tasks rather than simply observing. As a Vacation Student in Deloitte's Tax team, I was responsible for preparing and reviewing sections of Upfront Reviews (UFRs), analysing residency and tax positions for internationally mobile employees, carrying out compensation and payroll analysis, preparing notes for tax returns, and supporting managers with client deliverables.
I was expected to manage my workload, prioritise deadlines, communicate with colleagues when I needed clarification, and ensure my work was accurate before submitting it for review. While there was always support available from the team, I was given responsibility for completing tasks independently and contributing to real client work, which helped me develop both my technical knowledge and professional confidence.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, definitely. During my internship I developed both my technical and professional skills significantly.
On the technical side, I strengthened my understanding of UK personal tax, particularly in areas such as residence status, split-year treatment, international assignments, payroll analysis and tax return preparation. I also became more confident using Excel and working with large datasets to perform compensation and payroll analysis. Through preparing UFRs and reviewing client information, I improved my ability to analyse complex information and apply tax rules in practice.
On the professional side, I developed my communication skills by working with colleagues across different levels of the team, asking questions, discussing technical issues and drafting professional emails and client-facing notes. I also improved my time management and organisational skills by balancing multiple tasks and deadlines, often taking ownership of work and managing it independently before submitting it for review

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a high level of support throughout the internship. Managers and colleagues were always willing to answer questions, provide feedback, and help me develop my understanding of technical topics. At the same time, I was given the opportunity to work independently and take ownership of tasks, which helped me build confidence and develop professionally.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture was professional, collaborative and supportive. Everyone was approachable and willing to help, which created a positive learning environment. Although there was a strong focus on delivering high-quality work, colleagues were also keen to share their knowledge and support my development, making me feel like a valued member of the team.
