Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I had the pleasure of interning with the employment tax services team at Deloitte's Birmingham office. On a day-to-day basis, the job involves processing client queries in relation to their employment tax concerns, often concerning issues like calculating National Insurance, reporting unpaid tax to HMRC (disclosure), conducting employment status reviews and providing tax calculations for matters such as employee benefits.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a fair bit of responsibility and this gradually increased over the course of the internship. My work was obviously reviewed but I did assist with the drafting of memos/notes for clients, as well as assisting with client queries.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I felt really well supported across the course of the internship- the structures set up with my 'Buddy', 'Champion' and 'People Leader' meant that I had the chance to speak to somebody nearly everyday. They were all incredibly supportive and were more than willing to give me time to discuss the role and my career with them.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Really good; everyone in the Birmingham office was incredibly friendly and the environment was super supportive so that I was unafraid to ask any questions I had.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I have really enjoyed the internship. I was not entirely sure what the role would entail before joining but I came to really get into the swing of things. The team were incredibly supportive and set me an appropriate amount of work to get a real feel for what the team does.

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte

Be honest and be yourself- if you are successful, five weeks is a very long time to pretend to be somebody that you're not.
Ask questions- not silly ones, but ones that clearly show that you've been listening and you've got the capacity to think critically.
Be flexible and willing to adapt, including at interview- there is no harm in recognising the limitations of what you know and people will appreciate you for that.
