Summer Vacation Scheme Student Review

I was placed in the Global Employer Services - Equity and Incentives team. The purpose of this team is helping companies create plans to award their employees equity in the company. My tasks included filling out tax return spreadsheets, reading and drafting legal documents, admin tasks - such as billing or filling out due diligence forms - and doing due diligence research.

The tasks I completed did have significance, and did get passed on to the client. However, as is to be expected, all my work was checked and edited prior to being forwarded to the client, thus somewhat mitigating my feeling of responsibility.

I have improved my soft social skills, such as communicating within a corporate setting. My knowledge of tax and employee share plans has drastically increased (from a base of nearly zero). My ability to interpret and draft legal documents has improved (useful as a law student). My attention span has improved.

I was assigned a buddy, who was a recent graduate recruit, to help me settle in and be a point of contact. She was very helpful. I was also assigned a people manager, to guide me through the internship process, to discuss feedback with. I received formal written feedback from 4 colleagues to help me develop. All tasks were explained thoroughly to me.

Everyone was very friendly. The culture was fairly low-pressure and relaxed. There were less social opportunities for interns in the tax department, compared to the audit department, as well as tax departments at other Deloitte offices. Colleagues did however invite me to informal social events on a couple of occasions.

The atmosphere was enjoyable to work in. However, the work itself wasn't the most stimulating, due to me being an intern and thus unable to complete the more complex tasks. However, the internship has exceeded expectations, as I was expecting a much more stressful experience.
