Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a summer intern in tax, I was in 5 days a week to understand how private client tax works, sit in and shadow meetings, complete admin and research tasks but also gained a deep insight into complex tax issues and restructuring. On a day-to-day basis, we also had the chance to organise coffee chats with other employees of all seniorities, meet other interns, complete onboarding training modules, join in on socials and engage with our counsellors and buddies on advice for the internship, ongoing feedback and building a relationship with them.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given quite a lot of responsibility during this internship, although a lot of it was initial drafts of emails, documents, client-facing admin and spreadsheets, I could still see the impact this had in the bigger picture and saw the final result of what my work contributed towards. I also got to join an in-person client meeting in my second week to take minutes and draft follow-up emails for, which was a really good experience, especially as someone just joining the firm.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

We had a counsellor and buddy who gave us feedback throughout and ensured we were supported and integrated into the team well, even took us out for lunch. The other team members were also very supportive with any tasks they gave us or questions we had.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

Really enjoyed it, a lot of the tax-specific knowledge I gained was new for me so I feel more informed about the sector and I really enjoyed all the team socials like the corporate responsibility day, lunches and rounders team-building social. The tasks we were involved in also felt really rewarding to do as they felt like proper complex tasks, rather than smaller tasks that weren't used by the team.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to EY

Put yourself out there in terms of getting to know interns and also other employees, even approach partners and make use of the month experience.
Try come in everyday as sometimes you get given more work as employees see you in person, rather than just knowing you are online virtually.
Get all the onboarding done first week so you have more time to do tasks as the weeks go on.
