Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role at the Greenacres Animal Park was to clean, feed and check-up on the variety of animals at the zoo. Cleaning of the enclosures was a daily task and making sure that all animals had proper bedding, food and water before the start and the end of the day.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
At the beginning of my work placement, I was mostly shadowing the zookeepers to learn what my responsibilities would be throughout my placement. After a week of shadowing, I started doing individual tasks that didn't require supervision and mostly involved tasks such as cleaning enclosures, feeding animals, etc.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
My animal management skills greatly improved as I got to interact and handle species I've never seen or handled before. This included Ring-tailed lemurs, skunks, ferrets, wolfdog hybrids, etc. My time management skills also improved as well as my ability to work in a team.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received support from both my university and the team at my work placement. All questions and queries had been answered at the best of their abilities and both made sure that I knew that I had support if I needed throughout my placement.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The zoo was very professional but also very friendly, with the zookeepers always having the time to answer any questions I had or simply to converse with the team during breaks. It was a great atmosphere that helped me learn more and provided me with confidence to not be afraid to ask for help if I needed it.

Greeacres Animal Park is a great zoo that provides a diversity of wild and domestic animals and teaches you to not only work in a team but to learn to appreciate the connections you make during the job. The job isn't easy, but it is fun to learn and explore new things when you start out at the zoo as it provides a variety of new experiences for newcomers.
