Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As an Audit Summer Intern, I supported the audit team across different stages of the audit process, particularly during the planning phase. My daily work included completing audit documentation, reviewing board minutes and client information, performing testing and cross-referencing supporting documents, updating working papers, and using Deloitte's audit software to document evidence. I regularly attended internal team meetings and client calls, which helped me understand how audit risks are identified, how evidence is evaluated, and how professional scepticism is applied in practice. Working alongside experienced colleagues gave me valuable exposure to both the technical and collaborative aspects of audit, while allowing me to gradually take ownership of individual tasks.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes. Although I was closely supported by my team throughout the internship, I was trusted with a range of meaningful tasks. I completed audit documentation independently, performed substantive testing in areas such as inventory and property, plant and equipment (PPE), reviewed board minutes, and prepared working papers for senior team members to review. I was also encouraged to attend internal planning meetings and client calls, which gave me exposure to how audit risks are assessed and how professional judgement is applied in practice. As the internship progressed, I became more confident in managing my own workload and taking ownership of the tasks assigned to me, while knowing I could always ask for guidance when needed.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes. Throughout the internship, I developed both my technical and professional skills. I gained a much stronger understanding of the audit process, including risk assessment, financial statement assertions, audit documentation, and the importance of obtaining sufficient and appropriate audit evidence. I also improved my analytical thinking by learning to look beyond the numbers and understand the business rationale behind management's judgements. In addition, working closely with colleagues and attending client meetings helped me build my communication skills and confidence in asking questions, discussing findings, and working effectively within a team.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a great deal of support throughout the internship. My team was always approachable and willing to answer questions, explain the reasoning behind audit procedures, and provide constructive feedback on my work. They took the time to walk me through new tasks, review my working papers, and help me understand both the technical aspects of audit and the wider business context. This supportive environment made it easy to ask questions, build confidence, and gradually take on more responsibility as my understanding developed.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture was very welcoming, collaborative, and supportive. Everyone I worked with was approachable and willing to help, regardless of their role or seniority. As an intern, I felt comfortable asking questions and was encouraged to learn rather than worrying about making mistakes. The team worked closely together, shared knowledge openly, and created a positive environment where everyone was treated with respect. Social events, such as the team barbecue, also helped build relationships and made me feel included from the beginning. Overall, the atmosphere was professional but friendly, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, continuous learning, and supporting each other's development.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I really enjoyed my internship and found it to be a valuable learning experience. It gave me the opportunity to apply my academic knowledge in a professional environment while developing a much deeper understanding of how an audit is carried out in practice. I particularly enjoyed working with such a supportive team, attending client meetings, and gradually taking on more responsibility as my confidence grew. The internship also strengthened my interest in audit and gave me a much clearer understanding of the skills required to succeed in the profession. Overall, it was both challenging and rewarding, and I learned a great deal in a short period of time.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte

My advice would be to stay curious, ask questions, and make the most of every opportunity to learn. You don't need to know everything before you start, as your team will support you, but being proactive and showing a genuine willingness to learn makes a big difference. I would also recommend getting involved in meetings, speaking to people across different levels of the firm, and taking every chance to understand the reasoning behind the work rather than just completing tasks. Building relationships with colleagues is just as valuable as developing technical skills, and it makes the experience much more enjoyable.
