IT Audit Intern Review

During my internship, I supported the testing of General IT Controls (GITCs) on FTSE 100 audit engagements. I spent my first two weeks on the Tesco Retail & Group audit, where I reviewed meeting notes and client walkthrough transcripts, identified relevant control information and prepared evidence requests using Deloitte's internal audit platforms. I also updated prior year workpapers with current year evidence and used SQL and Excel to analyse client data that supported the testing of access, change management and IT operations controls.

I was trusted with a good level of responsibility from the start of the placement. I worked directly with Assistant Managers and Graduate Analysts on live client engagements and regularly supported work requested by Senior Managers, Directors and Partners. My role began with preparing audit documentation and evidence requests, but I also reviewed completed work for accuracy before it progressed through the engagement. That gave me an understanding of several stages of the audit process rather than just a single task.

During the internship, I developed both my technical and professional skills in a client facing environment. I gained practical experience using Azure to understand and test cloud based infrastructure and services, strengthened my SQL skills by querying and analysing client data to support audit testing and became more confident using SAP to navigate enterprise systems and obtain audit evidence. I also improved my proficiency in Excel, using functions including lookups, filters and pivot tables to organise, analyse and validate large datasets efficiently.
Alongside the technical aspects of the role, I developed several professional skills. Working across multiple client engagements improved my organisation and time management, while regular interaction with Assistant Managers, Senior Managers and clients strengthened my communication and stakeholder management skills. I also became more confident presenting findings, writing clear audit documentation and collaborating effectively within a team to meet tight deadlines.

I received a high level of support throughout the internship. I had a dedicated People Leader who checked in with me regularly, offered guidance on my development and was always available whenever I had questions. On each client engagement, I was also assigned a Project Buddy who helped me understand the client, explained engagement specific processes and provided day to day support with my work.
Beyond the formal support structure, everyone I worked with was approachable and willing to help. I made a conscious effort to introduce myself to colleagues across the office, whether over lunch or between meetings, which helped me build a strong professional network and learn about different teams and career paths. I also had a Graduate Buddy who provided broader advice about life at Deloitte, professional qualifications and making the most of the internship. Having both formal and informal support made it easy to ask questions, build confidence and settle into the firm quickly.

Deloitte had a welcoming and collaborative culture from the outset. The firmwide induction gave a clear picture of the values and expectations across the organisation, with a strong emphasis on inclusion, respect and supporting one another. Everyone I met was approachable and willing to answer questions, regardless of seniority, which made it easy to settle into the role and contribute from an early stage.
The atmosphere was professional while remaining friendly and approachable. People worked hard to deliver for clients, but there was also a genuine focus on collaboration, learning and wellbeing. I found that colleagues were keen to share their experiences, involve interns in conversations and create opportunities to build relationships across different teams, which made the internship both enjoyable and rewarding.

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Deloitte and found it to be an incredibly rewarding experience. The vacation scheme gave me genuine insight into technology risk and auditing enterprise systems while allowing me to work on high-profile client engagements alongside experienced professionals.
