Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.

During the insight programme, I gained first-hand exposure to Portfolio Audit and learned how auditors support clients in producing reliable financial information. The programme involved presentations from audit professionals, networking opportunities, and practical activities designed to simulate aspects of audit work. I developed my understanding of financial statement audits, risk assessment, professional scepticism, and how audit teams collaborate to deliver high-quality client service. The experience also provided valuable insight into Deloitte's culture and career opportunities within Audit

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, the insight programme helped me develop both technical and professional skills. I gained experience using Deloitte tools such as Levvia and Connect, which improved my understanding of how audit teams document work, manage audit evidence, and collaborate across engagements. I also strengthened my proficiency in Microsoft Teams, using it to communicate effectively, participate in virtual meetings, and collaborate with colleagues.
In addition, I enhanced my Excel skills through working with audit-related data and performing analytical tasks. This improved my confidence in handling large datasets, organising information efficiently, and using Excel as a key tool to support audit procedures. Overall, the programme increased my technical capability while also developing my communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The culture within my immediate team was welcoming, supportive, and collaborative. Team members were always willing to answer questions, provide guidance, and help me develop my understanding of audit work. This created a positive learning environment where I felt comfortable contributing and asking for support.
However, I found it more challenging to interact with people outside my team. While many employees were friendly and approachable, there were occasions where it felt difficult to integrate with the wider office environment, and some individuals did not actively engage with insight participants. As a result, networking beyond my immediate team required more initiative. Overall, my experience was positive, particularly within my team, but there could be more opportunities to help insight students feel included across the wider office.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?

I thoroughly enjoyed the insight programme and found it to be both engaging and valuable. I particularly enjoyed learning more about Portfolio Audit, developing my technical skills through tools such as Levvia, Connect and Excel, and gaining exposure to real audit processes. The opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals and build my understanding of the industry was extremely beneficial.
The most enjoyable aspect was being part of a supportive team that was willing to answer questions and provide guidance. While it was sometimes more difficult to interact with people outside my immediate team and wider office engagement could have been better, the overall experience was highly positive and confirmed my interest in pursuing a career in audit.

Recommendations and Advice

Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?

Yes

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte

My biggest piece of advice would be to research Deloitte thoroughly and demonstrate a genuine interest in the business area you are applying for. During the application process, use examples that clearly showcase your teamwork, communication, problem-solving and adaptability skills, as these are highly valued.
If you are successful in securing an insight programme or internship, make the most of every opportunity. Be proactive in asking questions, volunteering for tasks, and networking with people across different teams. While it can feel daunting at first, introducing yourself to colleagues and building connections can significantly enhance your experience.
I would also recommend developing your technical skills, particularly in Excel, as it is a key tool used in audit. Familiarising yourself with professional collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams and being open to learning internal systems like Levvia and Connect will help you adapt more quickly. Most importantly, be willing to learn, stay curious, and take advantage of the support available from your team throughout the programme.
