Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Provided in class support to a specific year group as well as creating group and 1:1 interventions with focus list pupils in that year group. The focus list pupils are chosen based on academic support, attendance and behaviour.
Ran a games club and also did one break duty and two lunch duties at my school

We were responsible for our focus list pupils and break and lunch duties at school. On trips we had a group of kids to look after or supervise with another teacher

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Enhanced my public speaking completing a Red talk on a topic of my choice (Ted Talk) as well as leading group learning and development days (LDD)
Networked with industry professionals and explored other options through talks on a Friday

We had impact officers to mentor us and check on how we were getting on in school. Always felt that the senior staff were approachable and ready to help!

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Everyone was lovely. It takes a certain kind of person to do CY. Someone who is willing to dedicate themselves to supporting students for a whole year in a bright red jacket :)

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I loved it. It was tough in winter with the early mornings but being consistent and building relationships with the students was so worth it when they realised I there to stay.
It challenged me to take opportunities I would never go for usually like hosting a group intervention

What advice would you give to others applying to City Year UK

Be prepared to do more than what you expected to e.g. trips, certain lessons, duties. All of it builds you and adds to your skills. You’ll find that you can do more than you thought! Try and lean on your team because it makes things easier when you’re having a rough day
