Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Worked with both SEN/non-SEN students to support behavioural/ social emotional and academic development according to individual needs.
Provided both in class support and one-to-one sessions to support students' learning. E.g supporting students in Maths lessons , working on boosting self esteem etc.
Worked with pastoral and SEN staff to support students, consulting and communicating with them regarding my students.
- Utilised software such as IXL Learning to inform English and maths interventions and track student development (e.g through diagnostics).
- Planned and delivered structured 30 minute - 1 hour long “check in” sessions with students: focus on goal-setting, emotional and behavioural reflection and creating a safe environment for students to feet at ease in.
- Organised wider-school initiatives to raise awareness and promote student engagement: Positivitree, Kindness Badges, Nominating an Inspirational Woman etc, (Children’s Mental Health Week, International Women’s Day, etc).
Ran and helped out with extracurriculars, such as school trips and supervising clubs.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was responsible for a “focus” list group of 10 students, for which I had to plan sessions around and offer support when needed, such as in class or through our sessions. My role as a mentor also involved being on break and lunch duty on specific days, as well as clubs (e.g homework club).

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learnt many new skills during City Year, and developed the ones I have already been working on. For example, City Year focuses on “Skillsbuilder” skills e.g resilience, problem solving, creativity etc. Training days offer opportunities to work on these skills by bringing in speakers from different areas, like psychology, business, healthcare and more. We’re also given many opportunities to develop our skills through activities like a project management challenge, group discussions and more. We also have the opportunity to have a mentor of our own through the “Bridge Builder” programme, where we are connected with a mentor which can help us develop our employability skills, such as CV, interview skills and more.
