Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Arrive at school.
Meet with the pastoral team or City Year colleagues.
Review the day's timetable, student priorities, and any safeguarding or attendance updates.
Prepare resources for mentoring sessions or interventions.
8:15–8:45 AM – Student Arrival
Welcome students at the school gates.
Help create a positive start to the day.
Check in with students who may need additional emotional or academic support.
8:45–9:00 AM – Form Time
Support the tutor group.
Assist with registration.
Encourage good attendance, punctuality, and organisation.
9:00–12:00 PM – Classroom Support Throughout the morning you may:
Support teachers during lessons.
Work one-to-one with students who need extra help.
Lead small group literacy or numeracy interventions.
Help students stay engaged and manage behaviour positively.
Record observations for teachers and pastoral staff.
12:00–12:45 PM – Lunch Duty
Supervise social areas.
Run lunchtime clubs (sports, games, homework, reading, or wellbeing).
Build positive relationships with students in a less formal setting.
12:45–3:00 PM – Afternoon Lessons
Continue classroom support.
Deliver mentoring sessions.
Meet individually with assigned students to discuss:
Attendance
Behaviour goals
Organisation
Confidence
Academic progress
Liaise with teachers regarding student progress.
3:00–4:00 PM – Enrichment and After-School Activities
Help run homework club.
Support revision sessions.
Organise sports or enrichment activities.
Continue mentoring where needed.
4:00–4:30 PM – Planning and Reflection
Update mentoring records.
Complete any safeguarding or behaviour logs.
Meet with staff to discuss student progress.
Plan interventions and resources for the following day.
Key Responsibilities Throughout the Week
Building trusting relationships with students.
Supporting learning in lessons.
Delivering targeted interventions.
Encouraging attendance and positive behaviour.
Supporting students' wellbeing and confidence.
Working closely with teachers, pastoral staff, and safeguarding leads.
Helping with school events, trips, assemblies, and reward activities when required.
