Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role at City Year focused on being a mentor to KS3 students. This involved engaging in 1:1 mentoring sessions where we focused on a students SMEH as well as any academic focus areas that needed support set by the school. We worked on these by setting frequent goals to create and image or reward for students to work on. On a daily basis not only am I conducting mentoring sessions with dedicated students I am also supporting in class learning, whether that be Maths, Science or History. Supporting as a TA in class to support the integration of SEND students in a mainstream class and help navigate and difficulties, conflict or challenges.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, during this placement I was tasked with a list of students to help develop their social and emotional capabilities. I was also tasked with many roles such as developing a volunteer project day to conduct, lead Friday in person and online sessions as well as many more.

I enjoyed my placement a lot since it tailored to my passion for supporting students from similar backgrounds to me, low socio-economic status, and it also allowed me to express my joy of given back to the community that raised me too

Let an initiative like this be a passion for you because on the dark winter days the passion and drive is what will bring you in to show up for these students and the relationship you’ve built
Focus first on building relationships, being relatable because it’ll help the students find safety and security in you but also give you the ability to tell them off!!
