Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

The analysis and validation department at Rolls Royce Motor Cars analyses future technologies/products from a customer perspective. When issues are identified, it is the department's job to workout what is coursing the issue and report the problem back to the relevant persons.
This analysis is a mixture of hands on work with the cars, technical computer based diagnostics - using wiring diagrams and logged voltage traces, as well as some typical spreadsheet based data analysis.
While that is the role of the department as a whole, as an intern you do a variety of tasks: You get to experience these core jobs, as well as helping the department with long term digitalisation projects and constructing various jigs using 3D printers and CAD.
With all that said, as an intern in this department, you will of course also have your fair share of 'intern tasks,' these are tasks such as collecting parcels, raising orders for items and uniforms and cleaning when required.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

The responsibility you're given in this department varies massively based on you as a person. Personally the responsibility I was given varied a lot depending on the type of work I was doing. In a lot of areas I was given a good amount of responsibility. With that said, I would of preferred more responsibility when independently carrying out analysis on the cars.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Amongst a large list of new skills learnt this year, here are some of the more notable ones:
- Various software:
Catia V5 (CAD)
Exposure to various coding languages (C, C#, VBA, SQL)
Splunk
Various Rolls Royce In-house softwares
- Various skills:
Hands on skills through working with the cars
Developed my knowledge of cars massively
Ability to carry out analysis of problems
Other than technical skills, my transferable skills have also improved massively, as each day involves so much professional communication, that university does not.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

The base level of support and guidance in my department was very low. However, if you were proactive to seek this guidance out, the team were happy to assist. Overall, this is definitely something my department could improve on, although it should be noted that the support for some interns in other departments was on a much higher level.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Given that BMW Group is so large, the company culture is amazing to experience. BMW is very international, allowing you to experience so many different people, who are based all over the world, which leads to a very unique company. With that said, BMW remains rather Germanic in some areas, e.g. pay and job progression.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

While my placement wasn't perfect, I have loved my 13 months with BMW. Within Rolls Royce Motor Cars, you get to see many different sides to the company, which is an invaluable level of experience at this point of my career. The work life balance is also very healthy, which has helped with the overall enjoyment of the year.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BMW Group UK to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK

Rolls Royce Motor Cars, is not only a large cooperate brand (very useful to experience), it is also a company at the top of its field. These two features are hard to experience elsewhere and for that reason I would definitely recommend it to anyone. Additionally, even if the job role is slightly beyond the scope of the degree, by just experiencing this company for a year will teach anyone a lot.
With that said, I believe with such a large company, comes a large range of opinions. Some people have enjoyed their placement just as much as I have, where as others have not. Each department will offer a different experience, so it's impossible for me to fully summarise BMW group into one.
