Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I work within the Market Risk team in Group Risk Control at UBS, covering Cash Equities and Capital Markets Financing (CMF) across EMEA. On a day-to-day basis, this involves monitoring portfolio risk, conducting trade approvals, reviewing VaR and stress metrics, and producing daily, weekly, and monthly reports for senior management. I also work on longer-term analytical projects, including Python-based automation tools to improve existing risk workflows.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes — from early in the placement I was given ownership of live BAU tasks including daily risk checks, trade approvals, and senior management reporting. I also independently developed and maintained Python tools used by the team to replace legacy Excel processes, and have been involved in presenting findings to stakeholders across the business.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, across the placement I significantly developed my Python programming skills, building end-to-end data pipelines to migrate legacy Excel-based risk tools into automated Python workflows. I also developed strong proficiency in Bloomberg Terminal for equity risk monitoring, and gained hands-on experience with financial risk frameworks including VaR, stress testing, and limit governance. Beyond technical skills, I improved my professional communication through regular senior management reporting and stakeholder presentations, and developed my ability to work within a highly regulated, fast-paced financial environment.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a strong level of support throughout my placement. My line manager and team were readily available to guide me through onboarding and into live BAU tasks, providing clear direction while still allowing me the autonomy to take ownership of my work. Regular check-ins and a collaborative team environment meant I could always raise questions or seek feedback when needed, making it a well-supported yet independently driven experience.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture at UBS was professional yet collaborative and inclusive. The team fostered an open environment where questions were encouraged and knowledge-sharing was the norm. Despite being a large global investment bank, the day-to-day atmosphere within the Market Risk team felt approachable and supportive, with a strong emphasis on high standards, attention to detail, and continuous learning. Social events and cross-team networking opportunities also made it easy to build connections across the wider business.

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement overall. The work was intellectually stimulating, combining technical problem-solving through Python development with real-world financial risk analysis in a high-stakes environment. Being given genuine responsibility from early on made the experience particularly rewarding, and seeing my contributions, such as the Python automation tools, actively used by the team was very fulfilling. The supportive team culture and strong professional development opportunities made it an experience I would highly recommend.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend UBS to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to UBS

Be genuine and show curiosity. UBS values people who are eager to learn rather than those who already have all the answers. Research the specific division you’re applying to, as the business is vast and demonstrating awareness of your team’s function (such as Market Risk or Group Risk Control) will set you apart. Strong analytical and communication skills are highly valued, and any exposure to Python or Excel for data analysis is a bonus. Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of networking, relationships across the business open doors, so be proactive in reaching out to people from day one.
