Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work as a Senior in Audit, where I am responsible for delivering audit engagements from planning through to completion. On a day‑to‑day basis, this involves performing and reviewing audit testing across key financial statement areas, assessing risks and controls, and ensuring work is completed in line with auditing standards and firm methodology. I regularly supervise and coach junior team members, review their work, and provide clear feedback to support their development. I also liaise with clients to obtain information, discuss findings, and resolve queries, while keeping seniors and managers informed of progress, issues, and judgement areas. A key part of my role is producing clear, well‑documented, and defensible audit workpapers and contributing to the overall quality and timely delivery of the audit.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I greatly enjoy my programme overall. It has provided a strong balance between technical development, responsibility, and practical client exposure. As a Senior in Audit, I particularly enjoy the increased level of ownership over engagements, the opportunity to apply professional judgement, and the chance to coach and develop junior team members. The programme is challenging at times, especially around busy periods, but this has helped me build resilience, time‑management skills, and confidence in managing competing priorities. Overall, it has been a rewarding experience that has supported both my professional growth and progression within audit.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, I have both developed existing skills and gained new ones during my time on the programme. I have strengthened my technical audit skills, particularly in risk assessment, designing and executing efficient audit procedures, and applying professional judgement in more complex audit areas. I have also significantly developed my review and documentation skills, ensuring work is clear, robust, and reviewer‑ready.
In addition, I have built new skills around leadership and project management. This includes supervising and coaching junior team members, delegating work effectively, managing timelines, and communicating clearly with both clients and senior stakeholders. The programme has also helped improve my confidence in client interactions and in taking ownership of sections of the audit, contributing to the overall quality and delivery of engagements.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Overall, I find the programme to be well organised and clearly structured. It provides a logical progression as responsibilities increase, combining formal training with on‑the‑job learning that aligns well with the Senior role. The expectations at each stage are clear, and the programme supports development through a mix of technical guidance, coaching, and practical experience on engagements.
While the workload can be demanding during peak periods, the structure of the programme helps prioritise learning and development alongside client delivery. Having access to training materials, feedback from seniors and managers, and clearly defined milestones has helped me understand where I’m progressing well and where I can continue to develop.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer. This includes access to structured training, ongoing technical guidance, and regular feedback from seniors and managers throughout engagements. Day‑to‑day, I feel well supported through open communication within the team, with managers available to discuss issues, judgements, or workload concerns as they arise.
In addition, I have received strong support in developing as a Senior, particularly through coaching, review notes, and opportunities to take on increased responsibility. While audit can be demanding during peak periods, I feel supported in managing priorities and development, and encouraged to continue building both technical and leadership skills.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. This includes structured tuition, clear study materials, and access to tutors who are available to explain complex topics and provide exam‑focused guidance. The training is generally well aligned to the qualification syllabus and helps build both technical understanding and exam technique.
In addition, the provider offers support around exam preparation through mock exams, revision resources, and feedback, which I have found particularly useful. While balancing work and study can be challenging at times, the overall level of support has been strong and has helped me progress through my qualifications with confidence.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel that my qualification supports my performance in my role to a strong extent. The technical knowledge gained through the qualification has helped strengthen my understanding of accounting standards, audit principles, and risk assessment, which I apply regularly when performing and reviewing audit work. It has also improved my ability to exercise professional judgement and challenge audit evidence appropriately.
In addition, the structure of the qualification has supported the development of broader skills such as analytical thinking, problem‑solving, and clear documentation, which are key to performing effectively as a Senior. Overall, the qualification complements my on‑the‑job experience well and has helped me feel more confident and capable in carrying out my responsibilities.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, there are a range of extra‑curricular activities available to get involved in at work. These include social events organised by teams and the wider office, as well as opportunities to participate in sports teams, networking events, and firm‑wide initiatives. There are also professional development and networking opportunities through internal networks, volunteering initiatives, and training‑related events, which help build connections beyond immediate engagement teams.
While participation can vary depending on workload and peak periods, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved, and I find these activities help strengthen relationships across teams and contribute positively to the overall working environment.

Recommendations & Advice

Yes
Why?
I would recommend EY to a friend because it offers strong professional development, high‑quality training, and early exposure to a wide range of clients and industries. The firm provides a structured career path, with clear expectations at each level, and offers good support through training, coaching, and feedback.
As a Senior in Audit, I value the level of responsibility and ownership the role provides, alongside opportunities to develop both technical and leadership skills. While the role can be demanding at times, particularly during peak periods, the overall learning, career progression, and collaborative working environment make EY a strong place to build a long‑term career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
I would advise applicants to research EY and the role thoroughly and be clear about why audit, and EY specifically, interests them. Understanding EY’s values, its focus on quality and professional development, and the realities of working in audit will help you give more genuine and informed answers.
I would also recommend demonstrating a willingness to learn, strong teamwork skills, and resilience. Audit can be challenging at times, so showing that you are organized, proactive, and open to feedback is important. Finally, being yourself and communicating clearly during the application process goes a long way, as EY values people who are able to build strong working relationships and contribute positively to team environments.
